Mevlana Jelaludin-i RUMI

Mevlana Jelaludin-i Rumi is a 13th century philosopher and mystic of Islam who is known throughout the world for his exquisite poems and words of wisdom. The name Mevlana connotes to "our master" while Rumi relates to "the land of Rum", or Anatolia, which is where he lived. His doctrine advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity and awareness through love. To him all religions are more or less truth. Looking with the same eye on Muslim, Jew and Christian alike, Mevlana's peaceful and tolerant teaching has appealed to men of all sects and creeds.

Mevlana said..."Come, come again, whoever you are, come!
Heathen, fire worshipper or idolatrous, come!
Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred times,
Ours is the portal of hope, come as you are."

The "dance" of the Whirling Dervishes is called Sema. Sema is a part of the inspiration of Mevlana as well as part of the Turkish custom, history, beliefs and culture. Sema represents the mystical journey of man's spiritual ascent through mind and love to "Perfect." Turning towards the truth, his growth through love, deserting his ego to find the truth and arrive at the "Perfect". Then he returns from this spiritual journey as a man who has reached maturity and a greater perfection - so as to love and to be of service to the whole of creation, to all creatures without discrimination in beliefs or towards races, classes and nations. The wish being for a happy, healthy and peaceful life...

From a scientific viewpoint we witness that contemporary science definitely confirms that the fundamental condition of our existence is to revolve. There is no object, no being which does not revolve and the shared similarity among beings is the revolution of the electrons, protons and neutrons in the atoms, which constitute the structure of each of them. As a consequence of this similarity, everything revolves and man carries on his live, his very existence by means of the revolution in the atoms, structural stones of his body, by the revolution of his blood, by his coming from the earth and return to it, by his revolving with earth itself.

However, all of these are natural, unconscious revolutions. But man is the possessor of a mind and intelligence which distinguishes him from and makes him superior to other beings. Thus the "whirling dervish" or Semazen causes the mind to participate in the shared similarity and revolution of all other beings… Otherwise, the Sema ceremony represents a mystical journey of man's spiritual ascent through mind and love to "Perfect". Turning towards the truth, his growth through love, desert his ego, find the truth and arrive to the "Perfect", then he return from this spiritual journey as a man who reached maturity and a greater perfection, so as to love and to be of service to the whole of creation, to all creatures without discrimination of believes, races, classes and nations.

On December 17th every year a religious celebration is held at the site of Rumi's tomb and tens of thousands of pilgrims attend. In the shrine there is a silver plated step on which the followers of Mevlana rub their foreheads and kiss**. This area is usually roped off but is opened during the December pilgrimage festivities. In addition to the shrine of Rumi, Sufi pilgrims to Konya will visit the shrine of Hazrat Shemsuddin of Tabriz -generally visited before the shrine of Rumi, the shrine of Sadreduddin Konevi - a disciple of Hazrat ibn Arabi and a contemporary of Mevlana - the shrine of Yusuf Atesh-Baz Veli - and the shrine of Tavus Baba (who may in fact have been a women and therefore Tavus Ana). Inside the museum of Rumi there is a map that will direct visitors to the location of these various holy sites.

Mevlana died on 17 December 1273 in Konya. He was laid to rest beside his father. Over their remains the Mevlana Muasoleum was erected. The shrine is now a museum.

**this is a ritual of certain pilgrims and it's described as seen and doesn't mean endorsement of this ritual.
